By definition, homelessness is the lack of stable or permanent housing. This is a crisis that can be triggered by many factors. While homelessness has always existed, its scale in Canada today is far greater than what we saw before the pandemic.

In 2025, one of the most pressing causes is the dramatic rise in rental costs. Across the country, rent prices have surged to historic highs, making it nearly impossible for many individuals and families to afford not only rent but also associated costs like utilities, internet, and cable. At the same time, wages have remained stagnant, creating a dangerous gap between income and the basic cost of living. For many, this gap has made it impossible to remain housed, pushing more people toward shelter systems, encampments, or unsafe living conditions.

The housing crisis is not slowing down and neither can we. The time to act is now, because every day of delay means more Canadians are losing the security of a place to call home.
